Youth Photo Contest!

The Twin Cities Area Council of Camera Clubs (TCACCC) is pleased to announce its youth photography contest which begins on February 1, 2013 and runs through April 30, 2013.  The photo competition is a collaboration between the Camera Council and Capture Minnesota (hosted by Twin Cities Public Television).   Minnesota students between the age of 13 and 18 are eligible to participate.
The contest will run for three months.  During each month there will be two challenges, one which focuses upon nature and the other a more general topic.
A list of the monthly general topics is provided here:
  • February 1st – 28th  Show Us Your World – family, friends, school, neighborhood, community
  • March 1st – 31st   Tell a Story – through the use of a single image
  • April 1st – 30th  “Wow, that’s cool!” – images that make you want to say “Wow, that’s cool!”

There will be two winners selected each month from each challenge (one selected by popular vote and the other by the Camera Council judges) for a total of four winners each month. Each of the monthly winners will receive a $20 gift card from West Photo.
At the end of the competition, overall winners of the two categories will be selected (General Photography and Nature).  Certificates will be awarded for Honorable Mention; and, Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals, for third, second and first place – respectively.
A Grand Prize Winner will also be selected and will be presented a Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera and a 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom Lens (donated by West Photo).
Beginning February 1st, youth photographers can set up a login and begin uploading their images to Capture Minnesota at the following website:  http://www.captureminnesota.com/help/how-it-works
Submit your images under the “By Youth Photographers” category.   You must also select the challenge in which you are entering your image, either Nature or the Monthly General Challenge.   Additional instructions have been provided on the Camera Council’s website at:  http://www.cameracouncil.org/507453/youth-photography-contest/

This project was made possible through the collaborative and supportive involvement of various organizations, including:
Twin Cities Public Television (tpt),  which is hosting the Youth Photography Contest as part of Capture Minnesota – an online photo competition aimed at spotlighting the richness of all the things that make up our state, including our people, places, events and nature;
Digital Photography Bridge to Nature, an initiative of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, which promotes an appreciation of nature through photography.  Digital Bridge has provided educational support to over a 1000 teachers statewide, and has  put cameras in the hands of their students.   Digital Bridge was instrumental in helping to promote the TCACCC’s Youth Photography Contest; and
West Photo, who provided the prizes for the contest, including a digital SLR camera and zoom lens as a grand prize.

Minnesota Wildlife Photo Experience and Fundraiser

Minnesota Wildlife Connection can provide a unique and different experience for an amateur and/or professional photographer. At this facility an animal native to Minnesota’s habitat is placed in a natural, controlled situation to provide photo opportunities for an individual.

Lee Greenly, the owner of Minnesota Wildlife Connection, is offering a non-pro photo session as a fundraiser for Harvest Christian School in Sandstone, Minnesota. The proceeds from this photo session will go to benefit the school and assist in keeping it in working condition.

During this session, a photographer will be able to experience three hours with three different animals. One hour per animal. The animals photographed will depend solely on what Lee Greenly chooses as he will act as a “group leader.” The price for a non-pro shoot is $200 and will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013.

There will be a limit of 8 people for this shoot so if interested, please inquire via e-mail at mnwildlife@gmail.com.

Annie Leibovitz to the rescue?

Annie Leibovitz had the solution to Vogue's desire to honor the first responders of "Sandy" - and still kept the fashion images expected of Vogue. I thought it was creative and very well done.

See the slide show and decide for yourself.

Exhibition of Photographs by member Marjorie Carr

Special Event
The OLLI Artists Special Interest Group is proud to announce a reception for the Exhibition of Photographs by member Marjorie Carr on Friday January 25th from 2 to 4 pm at the McNamara Alumni Center classroom 235. OLLI members and friends are invited to attend. There will be a harpist, Diane Gilbertson, who will provide music during the reception. The exhibit will be on display from January 22nd to March 1st. Funds from the work exhibited that is for sale will be donated to the “Grandmothers Circle” which is a charity earning money through art work for grandmothers in Kenya.

Marjorie is a superb photographer as all who have seen her work in previous group exhibits of the OLLI Artists would agree. The exhibit will include over 40 photographs of her work. Marjorie has issued the following statement in anticipation of the exhibit:
“The symbolism of January being a time for looking back and also forward had not originally occurred to me when I agreed to this exhibit. Having proceeded with the project I find it is true. I am looking forward to learning new technology as well as enjoying new photographic experiences. And as Joseph Campbell said "not seeing new things but seeing things new". The images I have chosen represent a photographic journey of a very short time frame as well as happenstance I have met along the way. Not only is photography and technology rapidly changing but I hope I am making changes as well and I am anxious to learn other ways to make good art (and mistakes) during my encore years. I look forward to the photography years ahead and the journey within.”

If you are interested please email the office at olliregb@umn.edu your intent to attend. We would like you to email us your intent so that the office can better coordinate the event details. This event will be an open house and all are welcome!
