In Defense of Depth?

DOF is a major discussion at the Online Photographer this week. Is it blur we want, or the deep depth of field used by the great photography masters of the 20th Century? Or perhaps we need to explore the proper limits of both. I would also suggest that in many cases we are directed more by our equipment than our artistic drive.
