Two new exhibits opening this Friday at MPC

If you are free this Friday head over to the Minneapolis Photo Center to view two new exhibits opening this week. The first is a juried international exhibit: Urban View, Rural Sight. Kites at Lake Harriet

Hundreds of people participated in the kite flying event at Lake Harriet. There was just enough wind to keep them flying. Below are some images from this event.

McKnight Foundation Grants for Photographers

The McKnight foundation awards fellowships of $25,000.00 each year to 4 photographers to study, explore, experiment and reflect on their art. Click on the images below for more information, or go to McKnight Photo.org.

Beargrease Dog Sled Images

Kyle Krohn, Kit Larson and Marc Bowen will have an exhibition of their images from the Beargrease dog sled race. The opening reception is scheduled for January 15th from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Spring Street Tavern located at 355 Monroe Street Northeast.

Red Wing Photography Club News

The Red Wing Photography club is pleased to announce the gallery show of its members work at the Anderson Center in Red Wing. The exhibition will feature the work of 33 members of the club in the main gallery of the center. The opening reception is scheduled for March 25th at 6:30 p.m. The reception will include food, non-alcoholic beverages, music and an introduction to the members work. This gallery exhibition is in conjunction with the Red Wing Club's third anniversary.

Anderson Center

Named one of the top artistic destination points in the Upper Mississippi region by National Geographic Traveler Magazine , the Anderson Center has served the artistic community and the citizens of Minnesota through artistic leadership, program development, and support since 1995. It is the mission of the Anderson Center to uphold the unique wealth of the arts in the region; to develop, foster, and promote the creation of works by artists of all kinds; and to provide leadership and services that help to insure a strong, healthy arts community and a greater recognition of the value of arts in society.

The Red Wing Photography Club is very proud to be permanently housed at this facility. The club has its own studio/workshop/classroom on the second floor of the main building. The March gallery show is very exclusive as the center only has two full gallery showings each year. The club will have over 30 photographers from beginners to advanced amateurs on display.

The Red Wing Photography Club has been in existence three years and now has over 100 members. The club's mission is more about education than competition. It offers intermediate photo classes, an advanced exposure class, studio lighting workshop, composition class, and photo critique workshops to club members at no charge. The club is currently expanding its studio at the Anderson Center. When this expansion is completed the club plans to offer classes in photography for a fee to non-members.

It's not the Badlands, but it will be cold with lots to shoot. Think of it as training for Rikk's workshop.

The South Dakota Badlands

Here are a few of Rikk Flohr's images taken in the badlands during his residency. As you can see, the landscapes are incredible, and the wildlife plentiful even in winter.

THE BADLANDS WITH RIKK FLOHR

The South Dakota Badlands are without a doubt one of the greatest places to photograph in North America. The light and the landscape cooperate to produce a wealth of photo opportunities for everyone lucky enough to be there to witness it. But the Badlands are also large and it is difficult to be in the right place at just the right time to capture this national park at its best. So we are lucky here in Minnesota to have a professional photographer available to show us around the area.

Rikk Flohr is well known to the photo community here in Minnesota as both a professional photographer and educator. But what many people don't realize is Rikk has been selected by the National Park Service as its artist-in-residence in the badlands three times since 2007. He has through this experience developed tremendous knowledge of the parks scenic areas, vistas and wildlife. And with over 80 days of photographic experience in this area, Rikk has experience in both the summer and winter shooting seasons.

Based upon this extensive knowledge of the park, Rikk is a natural to lead photographic workshops that will capture the beauty of this national wonder. Rikk has just announced two workshops that will allow participant's to capture the park's beauty in both winter and spring. The first will be offered May 14-18 and the second December 3-7 of next year. Each workshop is limited to 8 participants to ensure full access to Rikk's knowledge of the area in general and his professional skills as a photographer in particular. (Hint: the spring workshop maybe limited to 7 as I likely will attend). And best of all these workshops are only $645.00 ($595.00 before February 28th).
