Hutchinson - Crosstown Photowalk

On August 17th members of the Crosstown Camera Club hosted a photowalk in downtown Minneapolis for a number of members of the Hutchinson Camera club.  We ate, drank and shot for over 3 hours on the Mississippi near Riverplace on the North Bank.

We roamed along the river bank taking images in the classic locations around the 3rd Avenue and Stone Arch bridges, and under the new 35W bridge until dark.  Then we headed for Pracna on Main for a few appetizers and drinks.

Below are images from some of the participants.  More will be posted as other participants submit them.

Kodak to exit consumer photography, while tech giants gang-up to buy patents

dpreview.com reported the event and Business Week. Younger souls will probably not care much, but my first images were from a Kodak camera, and Kodak film. I have great memories of Kodak. How sad that they didn't see this coming and stayed in the game.

Mini Soft Box for Speedlights

An interesting little (quite little, actually) fun product for Speedlights. It runs about $12 or less and folds up to slide into your pocket. I bought one and it does work on my new Olympus flash.

ini Soft Box

This diffuser for speedlites features the well recognized design of a softbox and produces the soft, big light that softboxes are famous for resulting in a significant improvement in the quality of flash pictures taken with it. Eliminates harsh shadows and produces a more natural result. Designed to fit all shoe mount speedlites on the market today. Folds flat for easy storage.
Measures 3.5 x 3.5” when open.

2011-2012 McKnight Artist Photography Fellowship Exhibition

mnartists.org Presents the 2011-2012 McKnight Artist Fellows for Photography Exhibition at the Rochester Art Center

mnartists.org, along with the Rochester Art Center, is pleased to present the exhibition of work produced by the 2011-2012 McKnight Photography Fellows. The exhibition runs September 14, 2011, through January 6, 2012, with an opening reception at the Rochester Art Center on the evening of September 14.

About the 2011-2012 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers recipients:

Beth Dow uses historical references and traditional photographic processes to address our use of land and experience of time. Her current project, ‘Here, Nor There,’ employs tongue-in-cheek conceptualism to cross-reference historical and local architectural landscapes which re-imagine history and space.

Peter Happel Christian’s work investigates social relationships with the natural landscape using photography, but operating within a broader practice which integrates performative events, sculptural objects, as well as science, philosophy, and history to create connections and disconnections with the natural world.

James Henkel’s James Henkel’s new body of photographs, LAB WORK, is a continuation of his interest in studio based still-life photography. Using vessels found in a chemistry classroom as subject matter, these works distance objects from their intended functionality by representing them as abstract formal arrangements that explore the relationship between art and science.

Colleen Mullins’ most recent work explores her sense of memory, family, and place through revisiting and documenting sites along the West Coast, recharting her family’s histories and creating new personal meaning.

The 2011 McKnight Photography fellows were chosen from a field of 100 applicants by a distinguished jury of nationally recognized photographers and curators. This year’s panel included New York-based artist Chris Verene; Karen Irvine, Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Columbia College, Chicago; and Sofia Hernandez Chong Coy, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, New York.

About The McKnight Artist Fellowships The McKnight Artist Fellowships were created in 1981 to help artists set aside time for study, reflection, experimentation, and exploration; take advantage of opportunities; and work on new projects. McKnight contributes nearly $1 million per year to individual artists through the 12 fellowship programs. The Foundation delegates management of the fellowships to arts organizations that tailor programs to the unique challenges of different creative disciplines.

1 Trillion Frames per Second - wow

NYTs Blog: criminalizing photography? Who did this?

NYTs Blog: criminalizing photography? Who did this?: the writer's advice - "For the general public, just be aware that this may happen to you. Tell them, “I’m on a public street, this is America, I can take pictures.”"

When you go shooting in public, be prepared, think about your rights and how you want to respond - especially if you are a visitor in an unknown place. Be respectful and know where you are...public areas are quite different from privately owned. Know your rights and decide ahead of time how far you are willing to go. Remember, no one can ask you to hand over your equipment, and no one can make you delete images on your cards. Try to walk away from an incident whenever possible.

Don't be afraid to file a complaint if you feel you are in the right. But, first and foremost, be safe.

About Peter Wong

Photography has been a passion for me since paging through a National Geographic magazine that my mom brought home. In 1969 I left the country of my birth, Malaysia, landed in Minnesota to further my education at the University of Minnesota and the College of St. Scholastica. After receiving a Bachelors degree, a moved to Minneapolis, time spent gathering knowledge on all aspects of photography - from working at a photography lab and as a "gopher" for prominent photographers - got me started as a commercial photographer in 1980. My clients were local and national advertising agencies and Fortune 500 corporations. I developed a second passion in trying to hit a little white ball, straight. As I learned the game of golf, I realized that golf courses were beautiful landscapes in itself, whether I drove the ball to the middle of the fairway or deep into the woods. With strokes of both luck and fate (no pun intended), I started photographing golf courses for resorts and private clubs, in Minnesota, Nationally and Internationally. As I got better at the game, my creativity in capturing the golf holes kept pace. My images were best describe by a client of mine as "a beautiful landscape image that happens to have a golf hole in it".

Need to know when the sun rises and sets?

sunrise-sunset-calculator from Cambridge in Color is a great help. Don't be afraid to let the site figure out where you are so they can set it correctly for your current position. But you can still manually tell the site the specific location you need.
